Middle Schoolers' News
This month our intrepid middle schoolers braved the wilds of Carmel for a weekend retreat at All Saints Episcopal Church called 24 Hours. Fr. Martin kindly met our crew, Frankie Waterman, Simon Evans, Becky Johnston, Claire Potts and Mike Powers, in the parking lot before we left and said a big fat blessing for us to have a safe and wonderful trip. The middle school mobile arrived in Carmel amid very loud mariachi music (thank you Claire Captain Radio Potts) and Jenni Walker, youth leader at All Saints, warmly welcomed us. Led by Rev. Canon Jan Smith Wood, the retreat theme this year was materialism. What better place than Carmel for a retreat on materialism, and what great timing before the holidays! All the youth groups were split up and mixed around into "scavenger groups," with whom we had activities through the weekend. This allowed us to bond with other kids from the Diocese. Then we cruised all the downtown shops and galleries looking for the most expensive item, the coolest item, the weirdest, most beautiful, etc. We saw everything from shrunken heads to a $75,000 rock (really, just a kinda cool looking rock.) Then we came back for dinner and the Grinch. We finished Sunday afternoon with skits on beautiful Carmel beach. Jan Wood was awesome. I hope she puts another 24 Hour event next year. December 1, our middle schoolers plan to go to the Pacific Edge Climbing Gym, which should be fun. Dennis Potts has kindly volunteered to teach a short lesson on Money Management this month, and we are all looking forward to helping the smaller Sunday Schoolers with the Christmas Pageant. See the calendar, and call me for details. In the Foyer, near the door to Mary Rhodes desk is a new bulletin board. On it is a space just for Youth Ministry! I'll post things there from time to time, and try to keep a current copy of the middle school schedule pinned up. Feel free to bring in photos of goofy stuff and we'll put them up there. Carter
