Dear Friends,

In The Purpose Driven Life, (a popular book which I have just begun reading), Pastor Rick Warren offers the basic point that our lives are not just about us.  We were made by God and for God.  And when we fully embrace this truth, life begins to take on more meaning and purpose. I am looking forward to exploring this thesis and book with you all, perhaps as an Eastertide study.

This month of February has several exciting and significant events which relate to our ministries and purpose in living.  On Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2pm, Bill Kelly will be ordained by Bishop Shimpfky to the Deaconate.  This is not just about Bill – the ordination service (Book of Common Prayer, p. 537ff, especially p. 543) and the symbol of the Deacon are to inspire and guide us all in serving as Jesus served.

Then on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10am, Bishop Shimpfky will return for his Annual Visitation.  His focus is mission – confirming persons for mission as baptized Christians, leading us in reaffirming our own Baptismal promises, and reminding us of God’s mission and purpose beyond our own needs.  Anyone who has not been confirmed as an adult and wishes to renew their commitment to live the Christian life – please see me as soon as possible.

Finally, Ash Wednesday is Feb. 25.  We will observe this beginning of Lent, this season of spiritual renewal, with services at 12 noon and 7pm  Children are welcome at both services.  (Wednesday noon communion services will continue through Lent.)

This Epiphany season proclaims the joy and glory of God.  We celebrated at our Annual Meeting (Jan. 25) the generous giving and dedicated service of our congregation which brought about a very successful 2003.  The rest of this Newsletter has many opportunities to laugh – let us practice the joy of the Lord, who rejoices in each of us and in our community together.  Thanks be to God!

             Yours in Christ,

             Martin Yabroff
