Text Box: Sore Feet and Happy Smiles!
On August 14, 2004, as St. Philip's faithful have done for many years, a smiling group of about 22 gathered at the Park-and-Ride in Scotts Valley, armed with plenty of water and the exact fare to Big Basin State Park, all ready for the 2004 Big Basin to the Ocean Hike. Some new faces joined the ever-faithful walkers, as random as Chaucer's Pilgrims in the Canterbury Tales. After a bathroom-and-coffee stop, it was all downhill (well, almost!) from then on. Groups broke up into smaller groups; news, views, and experiences shared; and within what seemed like no time at all they arrived, only a little weary, at the lunch spot at Berry Falls. Revitalized from the sacks lunch brought by each, they strode onwards towards the ocean. The first hikers were met at about 2:30 pm by the much-welcomed drivers who would transport them to a fabulous picnic at Greyhound Rock.
The 2004 Hike can boast a new claim: Scot Olivier became the first hiker to hike both ways...well, almost. "Ironman" Olivier drove to Waddell Creek, supposedly to drive Jong, Andrew and Kelsey back to town, but he actually ran in from the beach and joined the group who had not hiked too far at that time, to enjoy the rest of the walk with the group. What a guy!! (By the way, we wish Scot all the best as he prepares for a real Ironman).
The Hike would not be the great day it is without the help of the drivers and feeders. Thank you to all those who really do only "stand and wait".
If you missed it this year, join us again next year, for the easiest way to enjoy the fellowship of friends and the natural beauty of God's Creation.
See you next year.
