Donate Your Used Car!Last month, St. Philip’s received a donation of an old Porsche, which was happily accepted, registered to the church, then sold at 70% of Blue Book raising $1,800 for our ministries and making a Scotts Valley resident very happy. We have just received another donation, this time a 1985 Mazda, which will be available for $550. Contact the church office for more information. If you would like to handle this fundraising activity, please contact Fr. Martin. An organized person will find it very straightforward and not too time-consuming. Call the church also if you have a car to donate. |
Update on Johnston WayOn Monday June 7, the Board of Directors of the Diocesan Corporation approved a plan to dramatically reduce St. Philip’s debt, significantly improve our cash flow by reducing interest payments, and remove the last major obstacle to becoming a parish. The plan involves the sale of the house at 2 Johnston Way (immediately behind the church) and the forgiveness by the Diocese of $107,000 owed to the Olsen Estate (a diocesan endowment fund). A letter explaining this development was sent out by e-mail in June and is available in the foyer. The Bishop’s Committee, Finance Team and I support this momentous development. It is nevertheless sad to sell an adjacent parcel which has produced regular rental income and been like an endowment for St. Philip’s. Here are the latest developments: The Bishop’s Committee has selected Gary Nickerson, whose Help-U-Sell office is just down the street, as our agent. A fee appraisal is being sought to confirm the asking price. A Lot Line Adjustment is in process so the church may keep our backyard intact. Our tenants, independent of all this, have announced that they are buying a smaller house in the area and will be moving soon. The Bishop’s Committee has designated our Finance Team, led by Treasurer Bob O’Brien, to carry out these plans. Contact Bob, Fr. Martin, or Junior Warden Bill DeRouchey if you have further questions or concerns. |

Oh What A Night!! Trivia Night scored again! June 26 marked yet another successful night of fun and fellowship as St. Philip's faithful gathered to flex the trivia muscle and eat and laugh aplenty. This time we had seven tables with themes as varied as the Shotgun Wedding to Flower Power; about 60 people who pitted their wits against each other and, as usual, argued and bantered with each other over the answers (can anyone tell me for sure what exactly was the wood Noah used to make the ark, and can Nancy Connor really lick her elbow?). The costumes were as always amazing: Vicky Granger-Jones cut an amazing figure as the African Queen and Tod Connor looked at ease in his Rasta Regalia! The aroma of the food alone was enough to put pounds on everyone. Eve's three-tier cake (made from scratch!) was fit for any wedding reception, and just exactly what was that suspicious smell coming from those Hippies? Let nobody ever say that St. Philip's folk don't know how to throw a party. It was a fabulous evening, and all who attended vowed to attend the next gathering. It was especially lovely to see new, brave faces among the faithful, and I hope that the friends and family who joined us for the first time will return to St. Philip's for other functions later in the year. For those of you who keep score, the African Safari table took the prize for Best Table, although the margin between them and the wonderful Tahitian Twilight, with that superb mylar palm tree, was negligible, and the Flower Power table somehow managed to win the Trivia Prize. A special thank-you to Thomas Yabroff for encouraging the sale of raffle tickets. St. Philip's would like, once again, to thank the Hilton for their generous donation of the Star Prize of the evening, a night for two at the Scotts Valley Hilton, which was deservedly won by Fr. Martin. Thank you to Wendy Harrison once again for all her hard work in preparing the questions. All will agree a wonderful night was had by all, and we made over $800 to boot!! Not bad at all. If you missed this Trivia Night, be sure to mark your calendars for the next one. Lucy Gowan |
