Summer of St. Philip’s Favorites

If you have a favorite hymn, now you have a chance to request that we sing it at a 10:00a.m. service this summer.  There is a poster hanging between the exit doors in the narthex for this purpose.  If the hymn is not in the hymnal (either 1982 or 1940) or one we have sung before using an insert in the bulletin, we may need to ask you where we can find it, so we are requesting that you to write your name down also.  This is also helpful if there is more than one tune for the hymn and we need to know your preference.

The Music Committee has now selected the hymns for June, so please help us with July and August.  Don’t forget to be in church for the day you choose so that you can enjoy your selection!

Éilís Kennedy is an amazing Irish singer from the  Gaeltacht, county Kerry, who sings incredibly beautifully in Irish and English, and plays the pennywhistle. Her album Time to Sail was released to critical acclaim, earning her a place in the prestigious Irish Folk Festival tour of Germany and Switzerland last October and November, as well as a tour of Taiwan in May 2002. The rest of the time she runs a pub with her husband in Dingle, and takes care of her 3 kids.

Midsummer Gala Night

Trivia & Swinging
Seventies

Fun for all ages!

6.00 p.m. – 9.30 p.m.

Saturday 25th June

We will be putting the FUN into fundraising,
with our Midsummer Gala Night.

In the main Church building, the over-18s
will be putting their brains to the test in a team
Trivia Challenge.  In the Community Room, pre-schoolers to high schoolers will be engaged in many fun (and some relaxing!) activities with a Seventies Twist: learning the ‘hustle’, dancing queen competition, hippy jewelry making, art projects, games etc.

The cost per head will be $10.00.

Trivia Challenge

We will provide tables, quiz questions and coffee.

You will put together a group of about  8 people.  Come up with a theme for your table (Tahiti, Luau, African Safari etc.) and plan the decorations, menu and costumes.

Each table will be competing for prestigious awards in two categories: Trivia Quiz and Best Costume & Theme.

We would request that each table organizes a member to bring an hors d’oeuvre to share with the whole group and we will meet together in the foyer to socialize, before convening to the Parish Hall for dinner and the quiz.

Please contact Vicky Granger-Jones if you are interested in heading up at table.  I also want to hear from people who would be interested in being part of this event, but who don’t want to take on the responsibility of organizing a table.  I will be able to help you be part of a group.

Joining her will be local faculty and Celtic musicians Barry and Shelley Phillips, William Coulter and Deby Benton Grosjean on cello, harp, winds, guitar and fiddle.  Tickets to this rare concert are only $10 in advance and may be ordered by mail by calling Westside Stories at 457-2021, or come into the store in the Almar Shopping Center next to Safeway on Mission Street.  $15 tickets will be available at the door.

This program is part of The Living History Concert Series, sponsored by a grant from the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County.
