Our Worship:
Wednesday Apostle

For the past two years a few of us have met in the sanctuary every (almost!) Wednesday evening at seven o'clock for Apostle, one of the traditional daily offices of prayer.

The word “Compline” comes from the Latin completorium, complement, or completion.  It rounds off the day's prayers.  Often, in the monastic tradition, Compline was as likely to have been observed in the residence of the monks or nuns as in the chapel.

Its first observance was probably in the 6th century by St. Benedict in his Rule for living in Christian community.  It was the final common prayer, or “office,” in a daily round, which usually began at dawn with “Matins” and continue with prayer gatherings every three hours throughout the day until Evening Prayer and Compline.  Scholars trace out the various ways in which those prayers have been named and observed over the centuries.

At our Wednesday Compline service we follow the order found in the Book of Common Prayer, which includes Confession, some Psalms, the Lord’s Prayer, and intercessory prayers.  We include a time of silent centering prayer, and petitions for St. Philip’s itself and for individual needs, including our own.

For those of us who take part almost every week, this has been a time of reflection and calming, as well as a chance to share our concerns and intentions for ourselves and others.  The quiet circle becomes itself a prayer for our church and the world.

Compline is open to everyone.  Please come!
