Where Have All the Singers Gone?

I know that there must be more voices out there in the congregation just waiting to burst out in singing! Seriously, though, we could really use some more voices for the choir. We don't expect perfect voices (otherwise I wouldn't be part of it!), just people who find joy in the music and want to share it.

The commitment is not great - rehearsals are held after the 10 am service every Sunday for 20 minutes or so for those who are available that week, and we ask members to arrive a little early on Sundays we are singing in the service, for a run-through. So how about letting more than your shampoo bottle be blessed by your singing? We'd like to have a good showing for Christmas and we'll be starting to work on those pieces before too long. Come join us and let your heart sing along with your voice.

The Choral Project, the critically acclaimed and award-winning Bay Area vocal ensemble, kicks off its 11th Season with a Gala Opening Concert featuring some of choral music's most breathtaking compositions. Selections include Estonian composer Veljo Tormis's haunting runic choral work "Jaanilaul," Johannes Brahms's rousing toasting song "Tafellied," as well as a few highlights from the group's smash success One is the All, including Stephen Schwartz's inspiring piece "Kéramos" and Brian Holmes's poignant setting of Jane Kenyon's poem "Let Evening Come." Folksongs from Africa and the Philippines will round out the evening's exciting program.

Please join us.  Christ the Good Shepherd is very easy to get to.

Big Basin To The Sea Hike

Can it possibly be 10 years we have hiked? No one is certain, but what started out many years ago as a Youth Hike has become one of the most popular of our St. Philip's events.  So, as on previous years, on a Saturday morning in August,  a large group of hikers many young and some not quite so young, and all degrees of fitness, gathered at the Park and Ride in Scotts Valley for our annual route march to Waddell Creek. It was good to see some new faces, and sad to miss some who could not make it this year.

A cool gray morning, we were not really sure if we would need jackets or if the sun might eventually break through.

After the mandatory group picture, we boarded the bus to Big Basin and off we went to the top.  The air smelled wonderful and the whole scene was a sparkling testimony to God's creation! One more picture and we set off, laughing and happy to be in each other's company.

After about 15 minutes it crossed my mind that this scenery all seemed a bit too familiar!  Actually, we had taken a wrong turn in spite of our intrepid leaders and had tecked round in a circle!! (Todd Corgill, where were you this year?)Anyhow, we found our bearings and the rest, more or less was all downhill from there!

Berry Falls was glorious and full and crystal clear after all the rain in the spring, and lunch was welcome when we stopped forest and eat.

As we continued on our away we were met by Scot "Iron-Man" Olivier who had hiked in with young Noah, and still looked fresh as a daisy!  Where does that man get his energy? Talking of which, Katie Allen was our youngest hiker this year and she walked all 12 miles.

About five hours from Big Basin and we trailed in to Waddell Creek to be met by the real heroes of the day.....the drivers and picnic preparers.  Thank you to those who drove out to get us, we could not have done it with out you.

The Big Basin Hike is a real proof of how much we enjoy each other's company at St. Philip's.  In church and out at play.  See you next  year maybe?
