St. Philip's Women's
Book Club

The weather is warming up, and it's time to get outside with a good book and enjoy it! The St. Philip's Women's Book Club will be reading several good books this summer.  Please join us for either of two book discussions:  the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm; or the first Friday of each month, at 10am.  Both meetings are held at the church.

Selections for the summer months are:

June:    Bel Canto by Ann Patchett

July:    Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: A Novel by Jonathan Safran Foer

August:    Eat Pray Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert

September:    Acts of Faith by Philip Caputo

For more information contact Myrna Crooks Owen.

Happy reading!

Local Flavor:
The Best and Healthiest!

As we get into the heart of summer, it is time to enjoy the wonderful fruits and vegetables available to us in this great place we live.  Sometimes it is not easy or inexpensive to buy highest-quality organic produce during colder times of the year.  Well, right now is the season to enjoy the very best produce of the year—at very reasonable prices!  Our local farmer’s markets promise a wide variety of delicious produce at excellent prices.

Our bodies are at their healthiest when we eat the foods that are currently in season, so take advantage of the wonderful berries that are starting to appear in the farmer’s markets right now.

Look for healthy greens, lettuce, green beans, zucchini and other summer squashes, and lots of tomato varieties.

Be sure to look for vendors who are CCOF—California Certified Organic Farmers for the very best assurance of no pesticides.  Second best are those who may add some nitrogen to the soil, but do not spray their produce.  Be sure to ask the farmers, if it is not posted clearly.

With all the organic produce available now, there’s no reason to put pesticides into our bodies.  Some crops are sprayed so many times that the chemicals are deep into the fruit—virtually impossible to ‘scrub it off’.  Strawberries, cherries, and broccoli are among the most often sprayed, so it pays to go organic with these.

Take your kids to the Farmer’s Market, so they can enjoy the colors and smells of the produce.  Have them help you pick out their favorites, so they are more likely to eat it themselves.  Try something you’ve never had before—like a green zebra tomato, or a purple potato.  Now is the time for you and your family to enjoy the wonderful and delicious bounty of food we have!

Upcoming Music!

Parishioners! You are invited to request favorite hymns this summer. Make your request on the poster in the narthex and we’ll add it to the music selections. Also, if you have a special song that you would like to share with the congregation on any Sunday, please let us know and we’ll schedule you into the summer plan. If you would like piano accompaniment for your offering, Myrna is available to accompany you.

Grads! Our youth music group, Gen-14, and the choir will provide selections for our service June 3, honoring our graduates. Music will include: Come Now is the Time to Worship; Glorify Thy Name; This Little Light of Mine; Majesty; Deep Peace; and In Christ There is no East or West. Arrive at 9:30 to review the music with us prior to the service on June 3.

Dads! For June 17, sign up to be part of a “Dynamo Dads Celebration,” just after the service honoring our dads. If you have an instrumental piece, poem, song, story, or dance that you would like to share, please plan on joining us.
