Music That Makes Community

Early in June I attended a 3-day music workshop entitled Music That Makes Community, at St. Gregory’s of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco.  The purpose of the workshop was to teach musicians, clergy and lay people to select and lead “paperless” music in their congregations.

Paperless music is a movement to rekindle an ancient practice of singing that has been central to folk traditions for centuries.  Taught and sung from memory, it is simple and beautiful, faithful and traditional.  Sung without the use of a book or projector, these songs allow congregations to focus on singing from our hearts.

I presented a few paperless songs to the Bishop’s Committee during their recent meeting, and they encouraged me to begin teaching songs this summer on Sunday mornings.

Here are a few thoughts on why I love paperless music:

All ages can participate – young and old -- regardless of reading ability.  If you forget your reading glasses, you can sing paperless music. You don’t need a piano, guitar or any musical accompaniment.  Once you’ve memorized a tune or two they are in your heart and available when you need them. Members of the congregation who don’t read music will enjoy singing with ease. Folks who’ve been told they “can’t carry a tune in a bucket” will find they can sing with gusto and joyous hearts. We’ll save trees!

Even though the trees and other natural resources would wish it so, we won’t be using paperless music all the time.  We’ll try one or two paperless songs this summer, and see how we like them.  If you’d like to hear more about the workshop or you’re interested in paperless music for other services or meetings, please feel free to contact me.

Aid for Tahoe Fire Victims

Debra Gustavson from our church is collecting $10 gift cards to send to the Lake Tahoe area. There are many people in need of basics in the Tahoe area and gift cards to Raley’s (Nob Hill) Kmart and Safeway will go a long way towards providing necessities to victims of the recent wildfires. Please bring gift cards in an envelope with either an anonymous greeting or your name or your town. Debra’s son, along with his Tahoe neighbors, are hosting many people who lost their homes in their tiny cabins. He will distribute the cards as he receives them.
